Dr. Anup Katake is a member of the Technical Staff in the Guidance and Control Section at Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California. He has more than 15 years of expertise in developing high-fidelity electro-optical sensor systems such as star sensors, lidar technologies and vision-based sensor systems for precision autonomous navigation of spacecraft. At JPL, Dr. Katake is the lead for the development of a next generation lidar for hazard detection for Europa. Recently, he was the GN&C heritage sensors lead for the Mars 2020 mission. Prior to joining JPL, he was a Team Leader for Imaging Systems at Physical Optics Corporation where he designed and developed sensors for GPS denied navigation, day/night star sensors for azimuth estimation and omnidirectional high-resolution surveillance. While at StarVision Technologies Inc., he led the development of a first‐of‐a‐kind 100 Hz stellar gyroscope and autonomous Landing Sensor for Mars/Moon for the NASA ALHAT program. He has a B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University, in 2002 and 2006 respectively.
